Fifth grade sparks with fireworks

Our Learning in 5th grade:

Math:

We will be wrapping up our Winter of Fractions this month!  Our learning objectives for March will include more work with adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. We will move on to dividing fractions very soon. Please continue to monitor homework completion Monday through Thursday nights.

Reading:

This month we will be diving into fantastical worlds in our fantasy book clubs. We will be reading, writing about, and discussing our fantasy books. For our read aloud, we will read The Thief of Always which follows a boy named Harvey as he enters the world of the Holiday House. Book club reading calendars will be posted on Canvas. Please make sure your child is keeping up with their book club reading.

Writing:

We will be exploring the fantasy genre in writing. We will learn about the different elements of fantasy and studying different mentor texts for inspiration. Students will develop their own creatures and worlds to create exciting stories. Ask your child about their characters and stories!

Science:

This month we will be focusing on environmental stewardship and showing how to make a difference in protecting the earth’s resources and environment.  Our unit will conclude with our trip to Harford Glen.  We will then move into social sciences, Challenges of Information and Economics Unit.  Students will analyze examples of the media upholding a free and democratic society and analyze court cases relating to student free speech.
